The search behind this desk is run for us by a travel search company, not by the journal. Book something after searching and that company may pay us a commission. It costs a reader nothing, it moves no fare, and it is the only way this journal earns anything at all.

What this actually is

The fields belong to this journal. They are plain markup served from this address, and the town suggestions that appear while somebody types come out of a list file that travels with the edition rather than from a call to anybody. Nothing typed has gone anywhere until the button is pressed.

Pressing it hands the trip over. One line of query string leaves for a booking host that a travel search company runs on our own subdomain, and from there the search, the results and the fares are theirs. This journal has no influence over any of it.

We do not sell tickets. We cannot change a booking, cancel one, refund one or find out where a bag went. Book after a search and your contract is with whoever sold you the ticket, and their support is the support you need.

The money, in one paragraph

If you book after searching here, the search company may pay this journal a commission. It costs you nothing extra and the fares you see are the fares anybody else sees. That commission is the only income this operation has, and it pays for the walking shoes and the hosting rather than for anybody's living.

What the desk does with your details, and when

Typing sends nothing at all. The suggestions are matched against a file that ships with this edition, so a reader can fill the whole thing in, think better of it and close the tab without any outside company learning the desk exists.

Pressing the button is where that changes. The search company then has the route, both dates, the seat and the head count, along with whatever any web request discloses by its nature, and it sets its own storage from the moment its page opens.

The privacy policy describes it in detail. Short version: the journal itself receives nothing from your searches, keeps nothing about them, and runs no analytics of its own anywhere on this site.

Why there is exactly one of them

Because a search box in every sidebar of a walking journal would be advertising pretending to be furniture. There is one desk, it sits below the walks on the front page rather than above them, and no other page on this site puts it in front of anybody.

The rest of getting here

Three airports serve this city and the codes are DCA, IAD and BWI. Which one suits you depends far more on where you are staying than on the fare, and the difference in ground time between them is often bigger than the difference in ticket price. That is the whole of our advice, and we are not paid for it.
